I do not personally recommend the DOD add-on for Thunderbird or Firefox as I have had issues with it detecting my CAC. You can change default preferences regarding signing and encryption here. To use the CAC to sign emails in Thunderbird, assuming your AKO email is already set up, select “Account Settings” from the “Edit” menu and select “Security” under your AKO account. Occasionally you will have to attempt log in twice. Note that not all military websites work perfectly with Firefox. Installing the certificates in Thunderbird is more difficult, but can be accomplished by going to the certificate download page in Firefox, right clicking on each of the three links and saving each certificate as a file.
